Supernatural fans have taken to Reddit to argue an intriguing ethical dilemma; whether Amy or Benny should have been killed by the Winchester brothers.

Now, the show has Amy being killed for her misdeeds, while Benny is only killed with his express consent and for a specific purpose.

Some fans are not happy about this turn of events, feeling that Amy got a raw deal and was judged too harshly. Let's review the facts…

We first met Benny in Season Six when Dean was trapped in Purgatory. Benny Lafitte was a human, turned vampire, banished to Purgatory for betraying his master, The Old Man. His betrayal?

Falling in love with a woman. Benny feels heroic when we meet him, quickly befriending Dean and saving him from another vampire. He ultimately helps Dean to escape from Purgatory in exchange for being brought back to life.

His goal was vengeance, wanting to kill The Old Man for his banishment and subsequently causing him to lose the woman he loved.

Dean helps him in this quest and the two maintain a friendship. And then Sam gets cast into Purgatory. Without any measure of hesitation, Benny allows Dean to kill him so he can go and rescue his brother. Then Benny makes the ultimate sacrifice, staying in Purgatory voluntarily so Sam can make his escape.

Benny felt that he did not belong on Earth anymore, so chose to do the honourable thing and let Sam, who did belong on Earth, return home.

Amy was introduced in Season Seven, as a childhood love interest of Sam's. But alas, their romance would be short-lived as it turned out she was a Kitsune, a shape-shifting creature, being hunted by his father and brother. As a Kitsune, Amy was required to feed on pituitary glands from human brains to survive.

When she grew into adulthood, she took a job as a coroner so that she would always have a ready supply of dead human brains. Therefore, satisfying her needs without needing to kill.

But she also had a son, who started to become ill because he was not getting live brains, and, as a growing Kitsune, needed them to survive.

So, Amy started killing which attracted Sam and Dean's attention. Sam sympathized with her, understanding her motivations for the four people she had killed, and let her go.

But Dean had other ideas, and tracked her down, stabbing her in the heart and killing her. He orphaned her son and alienated his brother who was furious with his actions.

Fans on Reddit are massively divided over these deaths. Some are accusing Dean of being too harsh on Amy and too lenient on Benny, pointing out that Benny has likely killed far more than four people in his long and violent life as a vampire.

Others are on board, pointing out that Benny did save both the Winchester brothers' lives, which earns him some concessions from his past murders.

There is no right answer here, and it seems the fanbase was reasonably happy with how things ultimately turned out for Benny. But even those that do not wish Benny dead, still hold a great deal of sympathy toward Amy and feel she deserved better.

A mother killing to save her child has earned a special place in the hearts of the fandom, and rightly so.
