Summary:

  • The Gilded Age is an HBO period drama from the creator of The Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes.
  • One of the pleasant twists in the season 2 finale was Marian Brook and Larry Russell proving their chemistry with a kiss.
  • Fellowes revealed that the storyline for these characters wasn't completely set in stone, but that the possibility of romance had been in the works from the beginning.

There's nothing quite like a slow-burning romance, especially when it's done right. This is exactly why so many viewers are drawn to period dramas, because no other genre excels at the longing and twists and turns between characters.

Whether it is societal pressures or just personal issues in the characters' lives that get in the way, the audience can often tell who will end up together long before the plot is set. That's what makes the audience more cautious about every word, gesture, and look between the two.

In the case of The Gilded Age, many eyes were drawn to Marian Brook and Larry Russell, but it wasn't until the season 2 finale that the audience got an official confirmation of their attraction to each other, sealed with a kiss.

Louisa Jacobson And Harry Richardson Casting

Everyone knows that every storyline on a show begins long before the actors get their scripts and start acting. Sometimes the producers behind the show know where they want certain characters to go long before the scripts are even written. It's a matter of audience reception whether or not the intended storylines see the light of day.

As Julian Fellowes mentioned in the interview with TVLine about the finale of The Gilded Age season 2, the future of Marian and Larry wasn't exactly set in stone, but he had a sense of where he wanted them to go.

That drove every decision, starting with the casting process:

“I think it was always in the background. Certainly when the actors were cast, they were cast as a couple who looked compatible on screen if we got there. You can never be too definite <...> But in that instance, I think we always knew they were headed for each other,” the creator admitted.

Luckily, Louisa Jacobson, who ended up playing Marian, and Harry Richardson, who played Larry, had such great chemistry that viewers greeted their kiss with cheers. Now, however, the hardest task will be not to sink the new ship in season 3, if HBO decides to renew the show.

Until there is news, you can watch the first two seasons on Max. Keep an eye out for any important updates!
