Julian Fellowes, take notes!

Summary:

  • The Gilded Age is an HBO period drama created by Julian Fellowes, also known to fans of the genre as the creator of Downton Abbey.
  • As Downton Abbey has referenced historical events throughout its run, viewers have come to expect the same from The Gilded Age.
  • One of the Roosevelts, Mark Twain, or a member of an actual Vanderbilt family would make the most sense, fans believe.

Many great things can be said about The Gilded Age, so it is no wonder that the show has been renewed for a third season. However, viewers are hoping that the writers and producers will use the screen time wisely and not only advance the storyline but also have some fun with it.

One of the best things they can do, fans say, is spice things up with some real-life historical drama. Since the show is set in New York in the 1880s, there are plenty of opportunities.

Fans of the show on the r/thegildedage subreddit have come up with a few people whose appearances would make the most sense (and a lot of drama, too).

The Roosevelt Family

As much as people would like to see the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, appear, he was just born the year the events of The Gilded Age took place, so the chances of seeing him are pretty slim.

On the other hand, the Roosevelt family has been very prominent in American political life since the 17th century and had many branches to potentially explore on TV, so there are still plenty of notable people to choose from.

Mark Twain

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known to us all by his pen name, was already an established author in 1884, the year in which season 3 is expected to take place. Not only that, but 1884 also saw the publication of his novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, so that would be a lovely nod for any literature lover in the audience.

The Vanderbilt Family

This can be a little tricky, since some of the characters in The Gilded Age are already inspired by these people. It is believed that George and Bertha Russel were based on the real members of the Vanderbilt family, William and his wife Alva.

However, the actual Vanderbilts were such prominent figures in New York at the time that it would be a crime to let the opportunity to stir the pot pass them by.

To see if Julian Fellowes decides to bring any of the historical figures into the show, or to reference some major historical event in some other way, make sure to stay up to date on all The Gilded Age season 3 news.
