The Crown's Queen Screams Umbridge So Much Fans Can't Take Her Seriously
The royal drama? No way. We're at Hogwarts Year Five again, aren't we?
Netflix 's The Crown has enjoyed a lot of social media buzz recently, not least due to the actual royal family being less than enthusiastic about how the show portrays Princess Diana and the rest of the British monarchy.
However, with the new season of the show hitting Netflix on Wednesday, many fans can't seem to be taking The Crown seriously, and it's all because of the main actress choice.
The things is, Queen Elizabeth II is portrayed in the show by Imelda Staunton — an iconic and beloved actress who, however, is most widely known for her role of insufferable Professor Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter saga.
Staunton's portrayal of the evil teacher was so compelling that many people are still unable to properly perceive any other character played by the actress. Naturally, when they see Staunton's Queen Elizabeth, they don't see the late British monarch — they see that villainous professor from Harry Potter.
"I tried to give it a chance but Imelda Staunton's version of the queen in The Crown is too similar to Dolores Umbridge and I keep expecting her to be carried away by a troop of centaurs," Twitter user ShubnumKhan said, referring to the iconic scene when Umbridge gets what she deserves when a group of centaurs tackles her.
Others, however, seem to actually enjoy the casting. One Twitter fan said that it was "the most evil and fitting decision this season." Another one joked that "Umbridge really did use the Imperius curse on the whole world" to get the role.
Still, for many people it's really challenging to accept Staunton's character as the protagonist of the show. One person even wished that Staunton simply never played Umbridge so that people could appreciate her acting talent properly without constantly referencing her past work.
The Crown season 5 premiered on Netflix on November 9, with all episodes available for streaming.
