The Boys' Most Useless and Pathetic Character Actually Makes a Lot of Sense
The Gen V spin-off shed light on how supes actually get to the top ranks, and with Deep being extremely PR-friendly, he was a godsend for the company.
Summary:
Throughout its three-season run, The Boys TV series introduced fans to a wide range of colorful characters, from the tragic and likable to the downright disturbing and appalling.
Of course, the main focus of the show remained all kinds of superheroes, or supes, although calling most of them "heroes" is a bit of a stretch.
Yes, some of them were actually heroic idealists (at least initially), like Starlight, but many others were all sorts of depraved, with Homelander and Stormfront being among the most notable examples.
However, some of the supes weren't downright evil, at least far less so than the aforementioned individuals, and were just pitiful and pathetic.
Was The Deep Just a Pathetic Buffoon?
The Deep, brilliantly portrayed by Chace Crawford, falls right into this category, as even though he sexually assaulted Starlight at one point, the ensuing revenge practically destroyed his life, proving how weak and useless he really was.
Yes, he is a complete slime ball and even killed a U.S. Senator (though he regretted it and frankly had little choice, having been ordered to do so by Homelander himself), but at times he comes off as quite sympathetic (especially with his concern for sea creatures) and is constantly berated by his "colleagues."
With all this in mind, fans have wondered how he was ever accepted into The Seven, the greatest superhero team in the world of the series, but the Gen V spinoff actually answers that question.
Throughout the spinoff series, which recently concluded its first season, we see how much the students of Godolkin University depend on PR and ratings to determine their future careers.
The Deep Could Be a Beacon of Environmentalism
We learn that Deep was one of the graduates and was ranked #6, but the events of the series explain how he was accepted as one of the "greatest heroes," as Marie Moreau only gets to the top ranks by accident.
It is clear that he was a godsend to the Vought marketing team, thanks to his good looks (as Chace Crawford is quite handsome) and his emphasis on environmentalism, serving as "proof" that the company cared about nature.
Although it is never mentioned, it is possible that some sort of Vought-caused ecological disaster occurred during his earlier years, making him a perfect candidate to become a "PR shield" by joining The Seven.
Who knows, maybe we will learn more about his past in the fourth season of The Boys or the second season of Gen V, which have already been confirmed, although no release dates have been announced yet.
