The Boys Has Overdone It in the Satire Department, Gen V Reviews Show
The series’ irony is even more obvious now that Gen V is out than ever before.
Many fans of The Boys are confused by the reaction of the masses to the spin-off Gen V. While the show seemingly deals with the same issues and takes place in the same universe, it has been bombarded by IMDb users for the past few days, ever since the release of the first three episodes.
The reason is simple: people are worried that the show has gone woke.
While this is a valid concern for anyone who isn't a fan of equality or free speech, viewers of the original series never expected so much negativity from their peers. In fact, some of the things said about Gen V in one-star IMDb reviews leave The Boys' Reddit fans unsure if they are watching the same show.
The Boys may portray everything the radical conservative would like to see in modern America, but it does so in such an ironic way that it's hard to miss. Created as a satire of the superhero genre, both the comic books and the television show were never meant to be taken seriously.
Just as Homelander isn't the real hero U.S. citizens need, but the one they clearly deserve, The Boys isn't the show you need to consume without a second thought. Still, some praise it for showing "real masculinity" and "non-woke" (but literally fascist) characters like the show's leads.
And their Gen V reviews show just how damaging that can be.
The good thing is that even all the one-star reviews don't really affect the overall score too much. As of today, The Boys' spinoff stands at an 8.2/10 rating on IMDb, based on more than 7K reviews, so the general audience is clearly managing to push less attentive viewers out of the discussion.
However, everything can still change. If you want to tune in to Gen V and make up your own mind about whether or not this spinoff is just the woke version of The Boys, you can stream the first three episodes of the series on Amazon Prime Video and tune in to the upcoming episode this Friday, October 6.
