The Boys' Character Whose Survival Makes Precisely Zero Sense
There's been much conversation surrounding The Boys' unwillingness to kill off their main characters. With the fourth season currently in production, we are looking back and discussing one character in particular.
This character's survival makes zero sense and brings nothing beneficial to the plot. In fact, it drags the show along more than anything else. Let's take a look at who exactly we're talking about!
Born to Run
To keep it short, the character is Queen Maeve. At the end of the third season, Maeve somehow survived the carnage that ensued, lost her powers, then simply ran away. What many would have preferred to happen is Maeve perishing to save her friends. We still would have ended up without her but it would have provided good closure and added some depth to the show.
What makes even less sense is that it was implied that she would die on the plane if she didn't go with Homelander. It's a puzzling implication as she survived getting nuked while falling off a skyscraper, so a plane crash shouldn't take her down so easily. If she did survive the plane crash, she would easily make her way to either the US or Europe.
Another take is that she would be knocked unconscious and then drown before coming to. That is also plausible but still proves that keeping her alive was pointless. Whichever element you want to analyze, Queen Maeve would have been absent, dead or alive.
What the Future Holds
It is unknown if Maeve is dead or alive after running away, so what happened beyond the season three finale is up to our imagination. However, fans feel it is unlikely Maeve will return. What all the variables show is a slight inconsistency in the writing that was too complex to undo. Conversely, this could also link back to the show's inability to let go of any of its main characters. In that instance, we can expect to hear from Maeve in some capacity.
Regardless, it is an annoyance that a simple yet heartwarming end to a character's life was vetoed in favor of whatever the writers have going through their minds right now. It entirely overcomplicates a show that needs to be grounded and set on a new course — one that could be easily achieved with the death of a character. Based on the season three finale that should have been Maeve without a doubt.
