The series veteran criticized a serious mistake made by the writers.

Summary

  • The Bold and the Beautiful never fails to both delight fans and send them into a frenzy over bizarre plot decisions
  • Fans were particularly upset about a plot twist last year
  • Even the actor who played the character associated with that twist called the writers' decision lazy

It's been 37 years since the iconic soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful debuted in 1987. As a result, we have a crazy web of storylines, sudden turns, cliffhangers, drama, and recasts. Speaking of the latter, virtually every major character since the show's inception has been recast, with the exception of two: Brooke Logan, played by the legendary Katherine Kelly Lang, and, even after 37 years, the show's main hunk and heartthrob, Eric Forrester, played by the equally legendary John McCook.

As the years go by, the plot of the CBS show seems to have hardly moved at all, going in circles and using the same plot twists and tropes. The patience of the fans is wearing thin, and each year viewers criticize the quality of the writing more and more. But the fans are not alone, as John McCook himself shares similar sentiments.

The Reason the Writing Was Criticized

Last April, viewers of The Bold and the Beautiful were treated to another bit of scripted madness. Sheila Carter, played by Kimberlin Brown, accidentally shot and killed her biological son, Finn (Tanner Novlan), who was protecting Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), who had learned of Sheila's gruesome actions. Horrified by what had happened, Steffy started to dial 911, but at that moment, Sheila shot her.

The next time we see Steffy, she is in the hospital. All of her family members, all of her friends, have gathered around her to support her and share the tragic details of what happened. The only person the viewer did not find in the hospital at that moment was Eric. Yes, her own grandfather didn't show up to visit his granddaughter, preferring to spend that time with Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis), with whom he was having an affair behind Quinn Fuller's (Rena Sofer) back. Naturally, fans went ballistic.

The Longest-serving Actor Questioned the Writers Choice

The same sentiment was shared by Eric's portrayer, John McCook. In a conversation with The Bold and the Beautiful supervising producer Casey Kasprzyk and Jennifer Gareis, who played Donna, as well as the fans, McCook shared his opinion on what the writers did by choosing to leave the character out while his granddaughter was in the hospital.

'I disagreed very much with them, leading Eric away from that. I thought he should've been there,' he said. 'I don't think that they kept Eric away from the hospital because he's having fun with Donna. I think they just omitted it. I think they just… I frankly think it was a lazy decision not to write Eric in there with his family.'

This writing choice seems really sloppy. Even if the writers wanted to emphasize Eric and Donna's relationship, they might hold off, having McCook's character rush to the hospital to check on Steffy and learn of her condition. After all, she was awake at the time!

Other Actors Also Complain

McCook is not the only actor who criticized the show. For example, a year before the incident, the writers were criticized by Scott Clifton, who played the role of Liam Spencer. Liam is clearly portrayed as a dignified positive character, but in reality we see only an unpleasant person who manipulated the feelings of two women, both Steffy and Hope Logan (Annika Noelle).

The actor then took to his Twitter account to agree with fans who have heckled the character, writing, 'I want to choke Liam as much as y'all do. He's become a terrible person.'

However, we still can't tear ourselves away from our screens to watch the twists and turns! The next episode airs today, November 10th at 1:30pm ET on CBS.
