The Biggest Problem of Doctor Who's New Era? Too Many Riddles No One Cares to Explain
Fans are begging for answers.
Even though Doctor Who has been around for decades, and longtime fans are used to all sorts of secrets and surprises, there is something about the new era of the 15th Doctor that still leaves viewers unsettled. Now that the first season of the show's Disney reboot is over, fans feel there was too much hidden behind the camera.
Is there still a way for Russell T Davies to salvage things in the future? And what could make viewers truly happy with the 15th Doctor? The only thing viewers are demanding today is some answers.
Doctor Who’s Mrs. Flood, Explained
Speaking to SFX Magazine, current Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies wasn't sure if he'd ever reveal the secret behind Mrs. Flood, who breaks the fourth wall and communicates with viewers. No one knows who she is, and no one knows why she acts the way she does. The writer may just leave it that way.
“That hasn’t been explained, and it might never be, frankly. It’s very interesting, within the Doctor Who offices, we know exactly why that happens and yet I’m showing no sign of putting that on screen,” he teased.
This might have been taken lightly under any other circumstances, but given the number of fan questions left unanswered this season, Whovians are not buying this response. There has always been a mystery element to Doctor Who, but there has always been an answer at the end of the journey. Without it, fans won't get any satisfaction.
The fantasy world of Doctor Who allows the creators to bend the universe to their liking. They can rewrite history and change all the laws of physics, but they should show why it was important to the narrative and how it might affect things in the future. Throwing in characters like Mrs. Flood without explanation is just a sign of lazy writing.
From the mystery of bi-regeneration to the general uncertainty of where the 15th Doctor fits into the timeline of all the Doctor's iterations, some questions fans have asked are unlikely to be answered. However, with Mrs. Flood, there is still a chance to get a proper explanation in the new season in 2025.
Stay tuned for the latest Doctor Who news and updates to find out where the journey takes the Doctor in season 2 of the Disney reboot. Until then, you can go ahead and stream the first season on Disney Plus.
