He still has a long way to go.

Summary:

  • The Big Bang Theory was a CBS sitcom that aired from 2007 to 2019.
  • Almost all of the main characters got their happy endings, except for Raj, who ended up alone.
  • While some fans consider this choice unfair, others believe it was just what he deserved for the way he acted throughout the years.

From the very first season, and throughout the 12 years that The Big Bang Theory has been on the air, viewers have rooted for each of the main characters to finally settle down and find their niche in the crazy world around them. Though they were all talented, young, and generally good, each of them had their flaws to work on.

For Penny, it was her childish view of the world; for Leonard, his insecurity; for Howard, his attitude toward women and his co-dependence on his mother; for Sheldon, his lack of understanding of social cues; and for Raj, his chosen mutism.

While 4 out of 5 friends ended the show in a much better place than they started, Raj's progress was much more questionable. Yes, he managed to overcome mutism, but what else?

Though some fans were ready to riot for justice for Raj, others believe he ended exactly where he needed to end.

The Big Bang Theory’s Raj Ending, Explained

Overcoming selective mutism and being able to speak freely to women was a very important step in Raj's character development and should not be underestimated. However, unlocking the ability to talk to women was never going to be enough to actually end up in a loving relationship, but it didn't seem like that was Raj's goal at all.

He was determined to find a girlfriend and a wife, but he never really spent any time trying to work on himself as a person, to grow and to find pleasure in being alone. While the saying that before you can love someone else, you have to start loving yourself doesn't always work, in Raj's case it was absolutely necessary.

All his desperate attempts to get into a relationship ended badly because once he got a woman to be with him, he never made an effort to keep her interested in staying. While every other character was growing and learning, Raj remained his immature self, perceiving life in basic categories and never caring about the emotional weight behind them.

Though his love life was rough, he actually had a chance with Anu. Yes, their marriage would have been arranged, but that could actually be the best solution to all of Raj's problems, especially considering the fact that there was already a certain level of trust between them.

However, he walked away from the deal, setting himself up for a lonely ending. And this was either an eye-opening moment for him to finally start considering the emotional part of relationships, or simply a mistake he will regret for a long time. Unfortunately, we'll never know.
