The Big Bang Theory's Most Hated Character Deserved Better
Let’s be real, there was not a single decent person.
Summary:
- The Big Bang Theory was a CBS sitcom that aired from 2007 to 2019.
- Initially, the cast had 5 regular characters, but later two more characters were added as love interests for Sheldon Cooper and Howard Wolowitz.
- Both have faced a wave of hate, but only Amy Fowler remains hated to this day.
Just like any other show that started in the 2000s, The Big Bang Theory definitely has its questionable moments. Starting with the whole creepy personality of Howard and ending with the way Penny was treated by pretty much all the guys.
The sitcom relied a lot on sexist jokes and stereotypical thinking in the beginning, but it got better as the cast was balanced with more female characters who could compete with the male characters not only in smarts, but also in wit and willpower.
Perhaps that is why both Amy Fowler and Bernadette Rostenkowski received so much hate when they first appeared.
Although Bernadette's character development over the years has made her far more rude, intense, and aggressive, she has surprisingly gained a fair number of fans over the years. Amy, on the other hand, who has actually evolved as a person, learning from her mistakes and growing, is still the most hated of the bunch.
Why Amy Fowler Is So Annoying
Annoying is the word most often used to describe their character, though everyone else has their own flaws. Sheldon was always a walking-talking red flag, Leonard was unfaithful and manipulative, Howard creepy, Raj non-committal, and Bernadette a straight-up bully, and yet Amy was the one who gathered all the Internet trolls around her.
It wouldn't be right to deny the existence of the beautiful privilege that Amy was denied. Of the three female leads, Amy was always the least conventionally beautiful and the least conventionally feminine. For audiences who were used to seeing Kaley Cuoco in short shorts as the only woman on screen, it was a big change.
Another thing that was very prominent at the time was the shielding of Sheldon Cooper from any kind of romantic storyline.
Just as Mary Cooped coddled young Sheldon in his childhood, the audience wanted to do the same for him as an adult. Suddenly, Sheldon was the only one allowed to mistreat people as part of his quirk. When Amy did the same thing, she was insulted all over the Internet.
Even in the series finale, where Amy was the one to point out Sheldon's selfishness, she received a lot of criticism rather than solid praise. While every other character was allowed to change and grow, and the audience was willing to accept that, Amy wasn't given the benefit of the doubt.
