The Big Bang Theory Leads Owe Everything to These 2 Side Characters
The most controversial characters of the entire show owe them their restored reputation.
Launched back in 2007, The Big Bang Theory had an extremely successful run for more than a decade and surely wouldn’t be the same without its female characters introduced at different times.
Initially revolving around a group of geeks that had quite low chances to build relationships with someone outside of their interest club, the sitcom brought seemingly ordinary (compared to her nerd friends) Penny to the screen, eventually making her the one to push the lead characters to big changes and thus giving them all a major development.
However, Penny isn’t the only lifesaver here as two other characters’ appearance also had a major impact on the others and even gave the latter ones an incentive to become way better than they initially were.
However hard Penny would try to accept Sheldon and Howard’s quirky nature (in very different ways), they both were still pretty cringey until Bernadette and Amy came around.
When Bernadette is first introduced in season 3 as a potential date for Howard, the latter’s motivation for becoming less weird and changing himself to deserve Bernadette’s love is almost visible from the other side of the screen.
Howard’s filthy jokes are suddenly nowhere to be found and he doesn’t even consider dating other women, eventually making Bernadette change her mind and get back together with him after they break up for a while.
The same season sees Sheldon’s future girlfriend and then wife Amy entering the scene, suggesting from the very first minute that she’s actually the best fit for Sheldon.
Being able to adjust her own habits and beliefs to Sheldon’s ones as proof of her feelings for him, Amy has enough of it all at some point and leaves Sheldon forcing the latter to reconsider the way he’s always treated her.
Eventually, Amy is the one to always guide Sheldon through his relationships with everyone around, including his closest friends. Her work is paid off in full when Sheldon delivers an emotional speech in The Big Bang Theory’s finale stating that he would never underestimate his friends and their deep care for him again.
During a conversation with Amy’s actress Mayim Bialik for her podcast a couple of years ago, Simon Helberg, who in the series portrayed Howard Wolowitz, admitted that Bernadette and Amy had come as a true blessing for the entire show, stating that The Big Bang Theory “grew an extra heart” as soon as both of them had become regulars.
Considering that it’s now hard to imagine what Howard and Sheldon would end up being like if it hadn’t been for their wives, such a revelation is something no one could argue with.
