Every millennial romance fan can relate.

Summary:

  • Ayo Edebiri is an American actress best known for portraying chef Sydney Adamu in the Hulu hit The Bear.
  • The actress admitted that when she was a teenager, her father grounded her for having a picture of Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Darcy as the background on her laptop.
  • At the recent Emmy Awards, the actress shared the story directly with Matthew Macfadyen, who portrayed Mr. Darcy.

If you still can't find a romantic story as compelling and beautiful as Pride and Prejudice, don't worry, you're not alone. Joe Wright's adaptation of the novel, starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy, was a way for many modern viewers to realize the appeal of period romance.

By the late 2000s, it was hard to find a girl without the biggest celebrity crush on Matthew Macfadyen, all thanks to his portrayal of the most romantic drama lead of the decade, if not the century so far. His images did not leave teenagers' school lockers, room walls, and, of course, computer lock screens.

The latter is exactly what got another star, Ayo Edebiri, into big trouble with her parents when she was just a teenager herself. Fortunately for all fans, the story was made public years later, not only by the media but by Macfadyen himself.

Why Did Ayo Edebiri’s Father Did Not Like Mr. Darcy

The dialogue that took place during the post-75th Emmy Awards press conference was captured by the lens of Entertainment Weekly.

The Bear star, who accepted her award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Macfadyen, who won the same award in the Drama Series category, were caught in a friendly conversation.

As it turns out, Edebiri just couldn't resist sharing the story of her father's tough parenting methods with the actor she idolized from a young age.

Back in 2005, when Pride and Prejudice was released, the actress was only 10 years old, so it's no wonder her parents were worried about some random men on her laptop.

After all, a crush on Mr. Darcy is not the worst reason to be grounded. Especially when, nearly two decades later, you can laugh about it all with the talent behind the beloved character after winning one of the entertainment industry's most prestigious awards.

Both The Bear and Succession, which earned Ayo Edebiri and Matthew Macfadyen their respective Emmys, were a smash hit this awards season, sweeping every category in which they were nominated.

If, for some reason, you haven't had a chance to check out one or both of these shows, now is the time to do so.

The Bear is available to stream on Hulu, and all 4 seasons of Succession are streaming on Max.
