The Afterparty Director Reveals The Secret Behind S2 Most Mind-Blowing Episode
No special effects are involved, only pure talent.
If there's one thing that draws viewers in even more than the mystery of the plot itself, it's The Afterparty's unique pace and dynamic that no other show on television can match. The show manages to find a new way to keep viewers glued to their screens with each passing episode, and one can only imagine how much time and preparation such shoots take.
One of the most impressive episodes of Season 2, which now has a 94% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was Ulysses (S2E7).
As it turns out, what viewers saw was the incredible work of both the episode's director, Peter Atencio, and the show's location department. This collaboration allowed the episode to look more realistic while saving The Afterparty a dime on special effects.
“When I first came in, they were expecting to do more of that through visual effects. But I was very adamant that there had to be a way we can be really creative with how we use locations to put the viewer in and make it feel as rich and real as possible. And I have to give it up to the locations department who did an amazing job,” Atencio said.
With one location serving both the Spanish house, and the Hindu temple, and the other location being an Irish pub right next to a very Tampa-looking beach, the director had a great pleasure filming the globetrotting scenes which could’ve been the hardest. However, that was only one of many challenges that Ulysses had put the team through.
From the excessive amount of dancing to recreating the melodramatic effect of the ‘90s Hollywood productions while still keeping up with the comedic part of the show, the episode required a huge effort from the whole team to turn out as good as it did. Luckily, The Afterparty crew was brave enough to take on the challenge.
If you want to see how Peter Atencio managed to overcome the hardships of filming a believable drama for a humorous and comedic show, you can go ahead and check out the second season of The Afterparty on Apple TV Plus.
