That Time Princess Diaries Brutally Missed the Mark
This coming-of-age comedy was truly a transformative experience for many (and rightfully so – it portrays teenage problems perfectly). However, there is one scene that makes you question the movie's writing entirely.
At the beginning of the movie, Lilly is complaining to Mia that her dad wants to spend quality time with her, and Mia, who has just lost her own father, says, "Well, at least your dad's still alive."
This is a very valid point coming from a girl who is still not over losing her dad, right?
Apparently, not to Lilly, who retorts, "Hey, I thought you were getting over that. It's been, what, two months?" Who even says that?
Is there some period of time you are allowed to grieve and then speedily move on that we are all unaware of?
Lilly's complete lack of empathy (in this moment and in many, many others – seriously, don't even get us started) is mind-blowing.
She is the worst friend ever, and you can't convince us otherwise.
Some fans, however, believe that this is a brilliant scene from the writing standpoint because it shows teenagers for what they are – and sometimes they are stupid, cruel, and selfish.
This may be a solid argument, but it is still hard to rewatch this scene as an adult without wanting to slap Lilly as hard as you can. Please, tell us we are not alone in this.
Anyway, Lilly seems to have redeemed herself in the second movie, where she acts like a much better and more supportive friend.
Hopefully, that will carry on to Princess Diaries 3 (if and when it finally comes out).
Although, all we really want for the third movie is for Queen Mia and Lord Nicholas to be together and thriving in Genovia. Is that too much to ask for?
We still don't know a lot (or anything) about the third installment of the saga, but here's hoping that Anne Hathaway keeps her interest in returning and maybe even convinces Julie Andrews to do the same.
There is no Genovia without former Queen Clarisse (or at least we don't want there to be!). At least, Chris Pine is still up for it!
