That Threesome Scene on Days of Our Lives Got It All Wrong
Some people genuinely enjoyed the scene, but many were left seeing red.
In its Monday episode, Days of Our Lives delivered a historically long ménage à trois between Salem's Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold), Chanel Dupree (Raven Bowens) and Alex Kiriakis (Robert Scott Wilson).
The length of the steamy scene is not the only historic thing about it, as this was basically the first threesome for daytime TV. However, not everyone was left equally excited or aroused by the scene, with some fans left fuming over how insulting they deemed it to be.
Aside from the conservative viewers who were triggered by the mere fact of a threesome happening on their screens, the scene also left many queer people and allies upset. According to them, Days moved to promote a message that two women in a same-sex relationship "need" a man to be truly sexually fulfilled.
"The issue here isn't with them halving a threesome, it's the reasoning for having the 3some be a woman in a same-sex relationship worrying that her girlfriend needs a man in bed to be sexually fulfilled. They could've been groundbreaking by talking about sex toys," Twitter user RadBren13 argued.
Another Twitter user, zipzipzooray, suggested the threesome storyline was "harmful to queer women", mainly because it fuels the assumption "that bi/fluid women still want [a man] even when they're completely happy with another woman. It's why gross men like Alex won't leave [female couples] alone."
With people fuming over the threesome scene being "insulting to bi couples" and potentially even a setback for queer rights, others blasted it as a "ratings grab", something that was done with " exceptionally poor taste."
Even if it wasn't for the scene's controversial messaging, the scene ended up being too long for some people.
"I just found it too long is all, like the actual sex scene. No script, just make-out for 10 minutes. I lost interest. Prefer the sex scenes with talking and interruptions." – @Marzeuigin
Other people, however, celebrated the fact that daytime television has featured a threesome for the first time, still considering the scene "hot" and "ground-breaking" even though it sparked so much controversy online.
Days of Our Lives is one of the longest-running soap operas, on air since 1965. In May 2021, it has been renewed through September 2023 — shortly after it celebrated its 14,000th episode on December 17, 2020. In 2022, it moved exclusively to NBC's streaming service Peacock — a move that made sure that the show could be more explicit with its content.
