Thanos Who? Cameron's The Way of Water Leaves Marvel in the Dust
It took 13 years for Cameron to make this Avatar sequel, but it seems like fans have been patiently waiting for the continuation of Sully and Neytiri's story.
It's been 13 long years since the first Avatar came out, and now critics are saying it was worth the wait. The reviews for Avatar: The Way of Water are in and people are loving it. The visuals are insane and the story is super emotional. But don't just take my word for it – even Cameron himself says it's better than any Marvel movie out there.
He thinks the characters in Pandora are way more realistic than Thanos or any of those other Marvel guys. Plus, the company that worked on the visuals, WETA Digital, is the same one that worked on Marvel and DC films too. So basically, Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water is the real deal.
Talking to Comic Book, Cameron explained his take on Avatar vs Marvel VFX:
"Weta Effects, as it's now known, is the best. Right? I mean, ILM does great work, but when it comes to the kind of emotive facial stuff that we're doing…I mean, Thanos? Come on. Give me a break," Cameron said. "You saw this [new Avatar] movie. It's not even close."
James Cameron isn't new to comparing "Avatar" to Marvel and DC movies. In October, he told The New York Times that "Avatar" has more mature stories than superhero comic books.
James Cameron is no stranger to comparing Avatar to movies from the Marvel and DC universes. In an interview with The New York Times back in October, he stated that the stories in Avatar are more mature and developed than the ones typically found in superhero flicks. This isn't the first time Cameron has made such a comparison, as he has a history of highlighting the differences between his own work and the popular superhero genre.
"When I look at these big, spectacular films — I'm looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn't matter how old the characters are, they all act like they're in college."
As Cameron reminded us, in Avatar 2 Sully and Neytiri will be raising children. And family life will change the characters a lot.
The theatrical release of the film Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled for December 16th. The other three installments are expected in 2024, 2026 and 2028.
