The actress and her children almost had a brush with death.

Grey's Anatomy actress Caterina Scorsone, who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd, revealed that she and her children recently nearly died in a terrible fire.

While the actress was getting her children ready for bed, she saw smoke. By the time Caterina noticed, the hallway was completely filled with black smoke.

According to the actress, the fire spread at lightning speed and she only managed to take her three children and run out of the house, even without shoes.

The actress said that unfortunately, her four pets, three cats and a dog, died in the fire.

Caterina wrote in an Instagram post:

"This is not a post about a fire. This is a post about community. This is a love letter to the incredible people that showed up and the incredible ways that they did. […]

What we learned is that the only thing that matters are the people (and beings) that you love. The only thing that matters is community. We would not be here without it and we are so grateful. Thank you."

Scorsone notes that her post is about the caring people who helped them.

Caterina thanks the rescuers, the investigators, the neighbor who opened her door to her desperate calls, the parents of her children's classmates who sent books and toys, and, of course, her friends and Grey's Anatomy co-stars who provided clothing and other assistance.

On Grey's Anatomy, Caterina Scorsone plays Amelia Shepherd, the sister of Derek Shepherd. She first appeared in the spinoff series Private Practice and then in Grey's Anatomy itself in season seven.

In season eleven, the character became one of the main characters after the end of Private Practice.

As an excellent neurosurgeon, Amelia has saved countless lives by becoming a hero to her patients, but more importantly, Caterina has become a true hero to her family in real life by saving her kids from such a terrible tragedy.
