Teen Wolf Movie Risks Repeating Annoying House of the Dragon Mistake
What's with the shows being so dramatically dark these days, anyway?
It seems like darkness is all the rage in the world of entertainment these days. First, we had Game of Thrones, whose final season was plagued with complaints about the excessive darkness in certain episodes, making it difficult for viewers to see what was happening on screen.
Next, House of the Dragon, the latest addition to the GoT universe, faced similar backlash for its darker color tone in the seventh episode, titled Driftmark. Interestingly enough, it wasn't just a problem with cinematography; it was a deliberate creative choice made by the director, Miguel Sapochnik.
And now the upcoming Teen Wolf: The Movie is seemingly at risk of repeating the same mistake House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones made before it.
The movie poster is dark; the trailer, for the most part, is dark too, featuring lots of scenes at night, in the dark, and with some pretty dramatic fog going on to boot. Again, in a sneak peek released a couple of month ago, you can see Allison beating the crap out of Derek in a locker room and later in a school hall while the surroundings are barely visible – that's how dark it is there. Is it a sad commentary on the lack of funding for schools? Or is it an artistic choice that, come January 26th, will ruin our viewing experience?
Good luck trying to decipher what is even happening here.
Fans are already having a field day with it, predicting that, for one, Eli's mysterious mother will be in the movie – but it'll be too dark for us to see her and tell who she actually is. Others are joking that, for all the tragic deaths the upcoming movie is hinting at, we won't even notice them in all that darkness.
So, dig up your House of the Dragon / Game of Thrones TV settings, folks, it seems like you're going to need 'em for Teen Wolf when the movie premieres on Paramount Plus on January 26. Let's just hope that with all the moody darkness it won't accidentally turn unwatchable.
