Ted Lasso's Most Dramatic Backstory So Far Is Actually a Huge Plot Hole
The most recent revelation of the show inevitably leads us to question whether Ted Lasso's AFC Richmond even exists in the same universe as us or not.
Ted Lasso 's season 3 has managed to capture and maintain everything we love about the show. We've had our doubts prior to its release, and now we're happy to have been wrong: the team's totally nailing it.
Still, we can't simply sit back and admire the general beauty of the series while getting huge plot holes thrown at us.
Yesterday, episode 11 of Ted Lasso S3 was released. It brought a sudden and dramatic revelation we've all been waiting for — but in terms of common sense, it's incredibly problematic.
We're not even sure Ted Lasso lives in the same universe as us anymore: the things we just learned couldn't have happened in ours.
In episode 11, the mysterious Coach Beard finally shed some light on his backstory. In an unexpected monologue, Beard revealed his past and the true nature of his friendship with Ted Lasso.
As it turns out, Beard has gone through some scary dark times and even served his time in prison, but Ted helped him get back on his feet.
It's nice to finally learn, you know, something about Coach Beard, and we're glad that he had such a great friend in Ted back in the day. However, Beard's story creates a massive plot hole that unfortunately can't be filled with the drama of it.
The Premier League football clubs' coaches are superstars. Typically, the people who train the world's best teams are often former great athletes or assistants of other legendary coaches.
This is true both in our world and in the world of Ted Lasso as we can clearly see in the show, so let's keep this in mind. They are superstars.
The thing is, in our world, a known felon would've never gotten a job in any Premier League FC.
However, since Rebecca Welton initially planned on hiring the worst possible coaches for Richmond, Beard could've gotten the job the same way as Ted Lasso. But this is where we run into the next issue.
In our world, the British press are hounds. Those people will find anything on anyone, and they're scary good at their job. Now, remember how the Premier League FC coaches are superstars?
That's right: Ted Lasso was under the spotlight as soon as he landed the gig — and this means, Beard was also subjected to it.
The fact that Beard was "just an assistant manager" wouldn't have helped him in the slightest: he was standing on the same stage as Ted, and we already saw how famous assistant coaches are as the show doesn't hide this reality from the viewers.
Coach Beard was under the spotlight, and he was a juicy target for the media.
The British journalists are notorious for their thorough and in-depth research, and AFC Richmond is clearly one of the most media-followed football clubs in England, according to the show.
Still, the writers throw a bomb of "Oh, the assistant coach of one of the best FCs is a former convict" and want us to believe no one knew about it.
Come on, now. Coach Bread would've never landed the job in the real world — but let's say his past was exactly why Rebecca approved him.
Still, the very next thing that would've happened in our world is a thorough background check by the press followed by a large public backlash and Beard's resignation to save Ted's career.
That's one great dramatic story Coach Beard now has, no debate here. But it goes against everything we've seen so far both in real life and in Ted Lasso.
Unless Ted Lasso really takes place in some other universe where the Premier League is not that big of a deal or the British press has no teeth, we don't know what to think.
