A round of appreciation for the world’s most annoying roommate.

Summary:

  • The Big Bang Theory was a CBS sitcom that stayed on the air for 12 seasons, from 2007 to 2019.
  • The show started out as a story about the group of nerds Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj meeting and becoming friends with an aspiring hot actress Penny, who moved next door. As seasons went by, new characters were introduced.
  • The Big Bang Theory has become a cultural phenomenon and many jokes and references to the leading character Sheldon Cooper are still relevant today.

There was a reason The Big Bang Theory became as popular as it did. From the perfect casting choices to the brilliant humor, there was a unique way that people could relate to the characters they saw on the screen.

Although the premise of the show basically brought together a bunch of rather wealthy geniuses, it also gave them struggles that many viewers knew well from experience.

From having to care for elderly family members to the inability to form romantic relationships to general awkwardness around the opposite sex, people knew how it felt and could easily relate to one character or another.

Sheldon Cooper, though the least ordinary of them all, also had a number of moments about him that were easy to relate to. His upbringing, for example, was always one of those things. Born and raised in the small town of Medford, Texas, he came from a family that did not have enough money to give all of their children a proper education.

His twin sister, Missy, ended up in a series of passionate but unsuccessful relationships that viewers have followed throughout the show. His older brother, George, however, managed to make a name for himself in the tire business.

Although neither of them had the same level of education as Sheldon, they managed to make ends meet.

Although he ended up being the only one who got special treatment and conditions, that didn't make him a snob or a cheapskate. If anything, Sheldon ended up being surprisingly generous, caring, and giving, even if those aren't the most obvious of his traits.

Sheldon Cooper’s Best Moments

While you could argue that Sheldon is annoying in many aspects of his life, you have to admire the way he handles money and people who need it. Coming from a household that didn't have much, he could have held on to the sums he started getting when he got his job at CalTech.

What would be even more logical, if he wanted to accumulate wealth, would be to go and work for some commercial structure rather than the institution he ended up at.

Although it still pays a lot, Sheldon's genius would have made him a millionaire in no time. His approach to money, however, is fundamentally different.

Sheldon sees money almost as one of the resources his body needs to live, and nothing else. As long as he is satisfied with his life and has food and a sense of security about tomorrow, he doesn't really need a surplus. This is probably why he lives in a shared apartment and spends so much on fun little things rather than on huge lifetime investments.

This would also explain one of the most heartwarming moments Sheldon has shared with Penny, when he lent her money without ever expecting it back. While this was a sweet gesture from one caring friend to another, it was also a very obvious signal of how comfortable and financially secure he felt at the time.

For a person who has a formal agreement for every single aspect of his life, being able to loan money to someone with no strings attached is a pretty big deal.

Another great example of Sheldon's generosity would be the time he donated 25% of his winnings to Howard and Bernadette's firstborn child's education fund. Although the moment was slightly spoiled by the comment about Howard's job, it didn't really ruin the nice gesture. It just reaffirmed Sheldon's best intentions for his friends.
