TBBT’s Deleted Scene Finally Explains a Huge Plot Hole In Sheldon’s Wedding
Why wasn’t the most important person there?
Summary:
- The Big Bang Theory is a CBS sitcom that was on the air from 2007 to 2019.
- Throughout the show, three out of four main characters got married, including Sheldon Cooper.
- The viewers wondered why Sheldon’s meemaw wasn’t present at the wedding, however, it turns out the explanation was filmed and then cut.
To say that there were a lot of difficulties in the production of The Big Bang Theory would be an understatement. The show was filmed in front of a live audience, which didn't leave much room for error, and it ran on a very tight schedule, releasing 12 seasons in 12 years of production.
The biggest problem, however, as with any show that runs for more than a decade, was consistency. Over the years, the writers came up with many characters and storylines that were near and dear not only to the characters in the universe, but also to the viewers on the other side of the screen.
And people were not willing to turn a blind eye to any instance of their erasure.
Sheldon's wedding episode was special for many reasons, especially considering that no one really thought the day would come. However, one detail cast a shadow over everyone's celebration. One of the most important people in Sheldon's life, his meemaw, was missing.
Why Did Meemaw Miss Sheldon’s Wedding?
Realistically, the absence of Meemaw was probably due to the fact that Young Sheldon had already aired on CBS with a completely different version of Meemaw.
During production, however, it was decided that Annie Potts, who portrayed the character in the prequel, would record a phone call to Sheldon explaining her absence.
In the call, Meemaw apologizes to her grandson, explaining that she is too fragile to travel, and that she simply could not make it to his wedding. As simple as it is, such an explanation would be perfectly fine for any viewer, and would fill in the plot hole that was ultimately left.
However, the phone call was not included in the final version of the episode because the production team simply ran out of screen time. Meemaw's phone call wasn't the only thing that didn't make it into the episode.
According to showrunner Steve Holland, there were a number of painful cuts and changes to get rid of the excess scenes.
“There were some jokes here and there that we lost, but I think the episode is stronger for it. We knew we weren’t going to skimp on the vows. We knew we weren’t going to skimp on the wedding. Some of those cuts were painful, but anything that wasn’t servicing [the central story] fell by the wayside.” he said to TVLine.
To this day, many viewers consider this cut to be one of the producers' biggest mistakes. Although it wasn't central to the plot, it would have had a huge impact on the audience and made the episode that much more heartfelt and memorable.
