TBBT Weird Scene Was Responsible for Sparking Real-Life Romance Between Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki
Leonard’s wishful thinking worked out for both the character and the actor back then.
For several seasons in a row, The Big Bang Theory has been pretty tricky about Penny and Leonard’s relationship, leaving viewers to wonder whether the will-they-won’t-they formula will ever get them a clear answer at some point.
The characters’ romance was quite chaotic, with both Penny and Leonard deciding to end it all for good and then getting back together (this time really for good), but their unstable status as a couple also provoked a real-life romance between the actors.
Ironically, it all became clear to both of them while filming the most ridiculous scene of the entire season.
When Did Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki Get Together?
The Big Bang Theory season 1 saw Penny and Leonard trying to figure out if they wanted to be a couple or not, and while Penny did have some doubts, Leonard was pretty much reassured about his desire to see Penny as his girlfriend.
The first season’s episode 14, titled The Nerdvana Annihilation, causes a major fight between Penny and the gang when Sheldon, Leonard and Raj buy a full-scale model of a time machine which eventually gets stuck in the building’s staircase, preventing Penny from getting to work on time.
The whole argument with his love interest leads Leonard to having a dream of him saving Penny and helping her quickly go down to the building’s ground floor via the broken elevator shaft.
The superhero-ish scene that sees Penny recognising her feelings for Leonard came as something pretty awkward, especially since it was a grown-up scientist’s dream, yet this exact moment actually helped Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki admit that they had been into each other in real life.
As Cuoco once revealed, she hated filming that scene just because she already had a big crush on Galecki, but had no clue it was mutual.
In his turn, the actor admitted that the weird scene was a pivotal moment for him as well since “at that point, both she and I knew that something mutual was felt, and that it was going to be more of a distraction from the work to try and continue to ignore it than to actually recognize it and surrender to it.”
Though the sequence still feels like a very odd moment to see two actors falling in love with each other, now The Big Bang Theory fans at least know where exactly the countdown of Cuoco and Galecki’s real-life romance was set.
