TBBT Stars Had Very Different Ideas for the Broken Elevator Resolution in the Finale
Years after the happy ending, it’s still a good thing that writers listened to Johnny Galecki and no one else.
Having spent more than a decade as one of the most successful sitcoms on TV, The Big Bang Theory made sure everyone got a closure, even the most annoying plot detail the problem for which was never resolved until the very last episode.
The show’s finale came as a huge relief for the longtime fans, revealing that the elevator in Sheldon, Leonard and Penny’s apartment building that has been broken for years is finally fixed and free for everyone in there to use.
However, the decision to give the constantly broken elevator wasn’t the only possible solution – and one of the cast members had a very different idea in mind.
As it was unveiled ahead of The Big Bang Theory’s finale release back in 2019, the long-suffering elevator owes its miraculous salvation to Leonard’s actor Johnny Galecki.
According to the latter, the show couldn’t just leave the whole issue as it was all along, claiming that “they’ve got to justify it in the writing somehow, because that’s inevitable."
The sitcom’s creators heard Galecki’s demand and gave a major update to the elevator’s long and complicated story, though this definitely was something Kaley Cuoco didn’t like. As Penny’s actress later on added, the solution of The Big Bang Theory’s long-standing problem completely ruined her own vision of the final episode.
According to her, her biggest wish for the last season’s plot twists was that “the elevator gets fixed, at least for a minute, and then we all get stuck in it”. Luckily, the creators ultimately opted for the fixed elevator’s better future by giving it a proper resolution.
It still may not have been The Big Bang Theory’s central line, yet the plot twist garnered everyone’s raving reactions quicker than anything else and, additionally, made the fans feel like that was indeed a real happy ending.
