TBBT Meemaw’s Story Looks So Sad After Young Sheldon Spinoff Casting Update

Even with Young Sheldon now being over, the story goes further, taking a closer look at Sheldon’s older brother Georgie and his family in the upcoming spinoff titled Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and the recent casting news doesn’t seem to be that exciting as it initially was.

Apart from Georgie’s mother Mary who is now officially set to return in the future series and has some potential to lead the whole plot line in a very wrong direction, Annie Potts’ iconic Meemaw will also show up every so often, trying to keep the rest of the family together after George Sr.’s death and Sheldon’s departure for California.

However, the exciting family reunion might take a radically different turn, considering how exactly the original show addressed the Coopers’ future after Young Sheldon’s pivotal events.

In The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon’s grandma Meemaw is introduced for the first time ever, but her visits to Sheldon in California have a much more disheartening subtext. It is implied that by the time The Big Bang Theory starts following Sheldon’s adult life, Meemaw is estranged from the rest of the family, remaining in touch only with one of her grandchildren.

Considering that Mary has popped up multiple times throughout the series, traveling from Texas to California, it seems like she and her mother never even thought about going to see Sheldon together, leaving Meemaw to travel all alone even at her advanced age.

Additionally, Meemaw never made it to Sheldon and Amy’s wedding in season 11, which is pretty weird given that even Georgie made peace with Sheldon and eventually came to the wedding, even though he didn’t consider such an option at first.

Since The Big Bang Theory never unveiled a single detail about what might have happened between Meemaw and the Coopers, her return to the story in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage appears to be even more bittersweet after Young Sheldon.

The recent news confirming that Annie Potts is set to reprise her role in the upcoming spinoff does imply that Meemaw and the rest of her family still have very close relationships established in Young Sheldon.

The future series may not address this issue since Meemaw’s decision to separate from Mary and her grandchildren can come way later than the lifetime Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will cover.

However, for now such a controversy does seem to be yet another plot hole, getting a possibility to join a whole list of inconsistencies that The Big Bang Theory has ever featured.
