TBBT Gets a Dose of Sadness with George's Young Sheldon Changes
As we get deeper into the life of Sheldon's family in Young Sheldon, which is in its sixth season, it becomes obvious that his accounts of George Cooper Sr. just don't add up.
We've all learned about the man in The Big Bang Theory through Sheldon's characteristics of his late father but the Young Sheldon series paint a completely different picture of George and this picture is bright and inspiring despite some of his "mischiefs".
So how come Sheldon has been telling us all those terrible things about his dad – such as that he was an alcoholic or that he did not care about his family.
In one of the episodes his dad was offered a good coaching position in Oklahoma, but George first of all thought about the family and turned it down.
He gave up a dream career and didn't even receive a "thank you" in return. So, it looks like the man truly loves his family, cares a lot for its wellbeing and loves his children – remember when he brought Missy to the best restaurant in town?
He certainly does have a problem with drinking and perhaps his early death is the result of his addiction which in its turn was caused by his inner demons he was unable to tame.
However, it looks like Sheldon just failed to acknowledge what kind of a great person his dad was and this fact makes us very sad indeed. As we've learnt all those good and heartwarming things about George Cooper Sr., watching TBBT becomes truly painful.
Actually, for some fans Sheldon's father has become the key character of the Young Sheldon series. In one of the threads on Reddit the TBBT fans argue that there is certainly a misconception that George is a poor father and husband. This is true for both shows.
But that is most likely due to Mary constantly "steamrolling over him". The redditors hope that the showrunners will not end up destroying his character for the sake of putting Mary on a pedestal just for one simple reason – to follow The Big Bang Theory canon.
There's also an interesting take on Sheldon-George relationship. One of the commenters say that Sheldon was just a child who didn't realize what his dad was doing back in the days. Moreover, he did not grow up to understand it as an adult.
"A lot of the things he said his father had done and the arguments they had had, changes a lot if one to imagine it being done sarcastically," a comment reads.
This is a good point and maybe it can partially explain why TBBT is so straightforward with George Cooper Sr.
