To this day, the original Gossip Girl remains one of the most iconic and nostalgic teen dramas for the entire millennial generation.
While the show's finale wasn't as exciting as it could have been, and there are some very questionable character moments that wouldn't be okay to air in 2023, Gossip Girl could never be undermined or replaced. The attempts to reboot it in 2021 only further prove this point.
While there were several major cast scandals during the show's run on The CW, Taylor Momsen's exit was one of the most memorable. For years, the Internet was filled with speculation based on a few comments Momsen made to the press at the time, but only now has the singer been able to explain the situation in detail.
She took the opportunity to talk about her departure from Gossip Girl, where she played Jenny Humphrey, on her on-screen brother Penn Badgley's podcast Podcrushed:
“It was a childhood thing that I got put into at two years old. I wasn’t making my own choices then. Literally, as soon as I got to an age where I could make my own decisions, it was like a click. I woke up one morning and went, ‘Wait a second. I don’t have to do this? I don’t have to do this other job?” the star explained her resilience toward acting.
Over the past decade, there's been a lot of discussion about the mental health of child actors and the struggles they go through. While Momsen did not blame anyone specifically, she made it clear that her life was strictly controlled by "larger forces" until she was of age and could make her own decisions.
This would also explain the young star's attitude immediately after leaving Gossip Girl. While many fans tried to find a deeper meaning in the snarky comments, the reality was that Taylor Momsen was finally free of a job she didn't enjoy and was trying to distance herself from it as best she could.
