One of the world’s most iconic movie directors is leaving the industry after completing his final film — and here’s everything we know about Movie Critic, his last project.

Quentin Tarantino is way more than just a household name: he’s a legend of the movie industry and the creator of some of the most iconic and cult-classic movies of all time.

The world-famous director intends to leave Hollywood after completing his tenth and final movie, The Movie Critic. So far, few things are known about it for sure.

The protagonist of The Movie Critic will be based on a real person. While the director decided against revealing his name, he talked about one particular critic he really enjoyed back in the day.

“He wrote about mainstream movies and he was the second-string critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was as cynical as hell. <...> He was very rude, you know. He cursed. He used racial slurs. But his shit was really funny. He was as rude as hell. He wrote like he was 55 but he was only in his early to mid-30s,” Tarantino told Deadline.

No one has been cast for the movie so far, and the only hint the director gave was that he would have to work with a new leading man. To stay true to the life of the anonymous movie critic, he would need a younger lead than his favorite go-tos, Leonardo Dicaprio and Brad Pitt.

The Movie Critic will be shot in California, and the director already has a $20M tax subsidy from the state to film it. Tarantino explained that it’s important to him to shoot in LA.

“I love shooting in California. I started directing movies here and it is only fitting that I shoot my final motion picture in the cinema capital of the world. <...> The producers and I are thrilled to be making #10 in Los Angeles,” the director told Variety.

Other than this, there’s not much other information about Movie Critic that would be confirmed by Quentin Tarantino himself. Admittedly, the film was already in its earliest stages of development when the double strike began, but now it can’t proceed — so we can’t even pretend that we know when The Movie Critic will be out.
