It's no secret that Supernatural was not initially supposed to last this long. Now one of The CW's longest-airing series, the show continued for 15 years, but the way it decided to end things remains controversial up to this day.
Many fans hate the finale of season 15 which also marked the end of the entire show. According to them, Supernatural should have ended long before season 15 and refrain from dragging the story and the characters through the desperate attempts to raise the stakes for the Winchester brothers.
A huge part of the fandom still believes that Supernatural could have saved itself the trouble of filming the ten seasons that followed season 5 — arguably the best chapter of the Winchester brothers' story.
According to fans, season 5 episode 22 is not only one of the best things that happened to the show, but also a perfect would-be finale for Supernatural, appropriately titled Swan Song.

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke planned the show to be five seasons long; which is why Swan Song feels so much like a series finale and not just a wrap-up of yet another season. However, in the wake of the show's massive success, it was decided that more needs to come. Still, over the years, fans felt that Supernatural was getting progressively worse — even though many fans argue that some of the show's best episodes come from the later seasons.
Despite the fact that after season 5 things are only getting started, many people choose to pull the plug on Swan Song, because "this is the real ending." Early seasons of Supernatural are still praised as "peak quality from a storytelling perspective."
