Yet another victim of lazy writing.

Summary:

  • Supernatural was a horror-mystery television series on The CW that aired for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020.
  • The show followed two brothers, Sam and Dean, on their journey to fight demons and other supernatural entities.
  • Fans believe that the longer the show ran, the more the main characters were forced into stereotypical roles.

It's no secret to anyone who's been a fan of TV shows and has watched a few long ones in the past that the longer the show goes on, the more chances there are for the writers to screw things up.

While it's always hard to say goodbye to beloved characters, sometimes it's better to do it early than to suffer the consequences of lazy writing.

When it comes to Supernatural, which lasted all 15 seasons on The CW, the fanbase is usually divided into two categories.

Some fans believe that the show should have ended in 2010, with the departure of creator Eric Krpke, who intended the 5th season to be the last. Others, however, are happy with the fact that we've got to see more.

Whatever your opinion on the matter, you'll probably agree that with each passing season, the Winchester brothers have become less nuanced and more carved to fit their dedicated stereotypical roles. Many fans believe that's why their dynamic didn't work as well at the end as it did at the beginning.

Who Is Smarter, Dean or Sam?

Of course, in order to have two brothers with their own distinct personalities, Supernatural introduced Sam and Dean Winchesters as two opposites from the very beginning. With Sam being the gentle scholar and Dean the adventurous soul, every viewer could relate to one or the other.

However, as the years went by, they began to lose their charm and appear more straightforward and one-dimensional.

“As time went on, the writers got lazy and leaned heavily into Sam Brains / Dean Brawn whereas the early seasons were more nuanced with Sam's book smarts and Dean's street smarts being harmonious. We see that Dean struggled with traditional school structure more than Sam but that didn't mean he was less clever,” Redditor Uniquorn527 said.

What was supposed to be a nuanced dynamic with both brothers complementing each other became just another TV show with stereotypical characters that fit perfectly in their places. With Sam being the brains and Dean being the brawler, Supernatural never lost its entertaining factor, but it began to lack depth.

If the show had taken the time to develop the characters instead of blindly dumbing Dean down, they could have come to the realization that many fans share online. Sam was never less physically strong than Dean, in fact, his body could probably handle more stress.

Dean, on the other hand, with his quick wit and great intuition, could have been a key to many more cases.

Whether you think the brothers' development was sabotaged by lazy writing towards the end of the show, or whether they stayed true to their original characters, a throwback to the earlier seasons is always a good idea. Supernatural is available to stream on Netflix.
