Is Negan actually the father of Sam and Dean?

Throughout its long run, Supernatural had its fair share of sneaky references to other shows and movies.

If you happen to be a fan of both Supernatural and another popular TV series, The Walking Dead, you're in for a treat with one of the coolest Easter eggs in the series.

In the fifteenth episode of Supernatural season 12, Dean Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles, struts into a scene covered in blood, holding a very familiar weapon, — a barbed-wire wrapped bat. Dean casually remarks, "Dad loved this thing."

For those who might not recall, Jeffrey Dean Morgan portrayed John Winchester, the dad of Dean and Sam, in the early seasons of the series. But the talented actor later starred as the notorious antagonist of The Walking Dead, Negan.

The exact same baseball bat, named Lucille, was Negan's favorite weapon. So, Supernatural decided to make this cheeky meta reference to it.

There have been several online exchanges between the actors, especially between Jensen Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Jensen Ackles shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of him holding the bet with a comment,

“Hey @JDMorgan I found this in the trunk...can I try it out?”

JDM responded in his usual charismatic manner:

“You weren't supposed to find that. Gonna need her back son. I mean... I already gave you my car. And? I don't know? Sorta, died for you.”

But for some fans, the brilliant cameo of the bat wasn't just a fun nod to The Walking Dead. The Easter egg sparked a fan theory that's been buzzing around the internet. Some fans believed that Supernatural and TWD might exist in the same universe.

The theory suggests that after escaping Hell, John Winchester either transformed into Negan or got tossed into a whole different timeline. Yes, this theory is as wild as they get.

While the theory is undoubtedly intriguing, the two shows clearly don’t share a universe. But it's still fun to think about the possibilities. Any fan of these two shows would be on top of the world to see the Winchester brothers taking on zombies.
