Supernatural Finale Is Mid, but Eric Kripke Believes His Would’ve Been Even Worse
Be careful what you wish for.
Summary:
- Supernatural was The CW's horror fantasy series that ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020.
- Many believe that the show dragged on and should have ended in season 5 as originally intended.
- However, the show's creator, Erik Kripke, is certain that his ending would have outraged the fandom even more.
Throughout the years of Supernatural's run, viewers have experienced many ups and downs alongside the main characters. Together, they have said goodbye to their favorite characters, solved the most twisted of mysteries, and battled the most powerful demons. Together, they have survived hundreds of deaths. Literally, hundreds.
And yet, no matter how much fans love Sam and Dean Winchester and have grown attached to their story, some things are still too much for them to accept. The grand finale of the series, which was released in 2020, is one of those things.
COVID-19 pandemic or not, people feel that the creative team should have done more to celebrate the iconic show that Supernatural has become after more than a decade on TV. Unfortunately, the underwhelming storyline of losing Dean and being forced to look at Sam in a weird wig wasn't what most were hoping for.
How Supernatural Was Supposed to End?
Whenever fans are dissatisfied with what's happening on their favorite show, they look for alternatives. Some find them in similar shows of the same genre, others jump headfirst into fan fiction and alternate universes made up by fellow fans.
Supernatural fans who are unhappy with how their favorite show ended can always refer to its production history. After all, creator and former showrunner Eric Kripke left after the fifth season. And all the failures that the show has faced from the sixth to the fifteenth seasons usually end up being associated with this fact.
However, Kripke himself does not believe that fans would have liked his creative solution. Here's what he told Entertainment Weekly:
“Anyone who's like, 'Kripke should've ended it,' I'm like, 'You would've hated my ending!' Because it was a horror movie and it was going to have a horror movie ending, so I can promise you the ending [they went with] you'll love much more than if you had let me end the show,” he said.
Although the show was originally created as a horror story, the executive team took it in an action direction after Kripke left the production. So the ending that fans saw in 2020 is very different from the one that was planned at the beginning of the show. Whether this is a change for the good or the bad, fans are still fighting about.
Perhaps one day Eric Kripke will reveal the secret of the Supernatural ending he had in mind when he started working on the series. Until that happens, though, you can always go back to season 15, which aired in 2020. Supernatural is available for streaming on Netflix.
