Supernatural Broke Its Own Season 2 Rule (And That’s Why It’s Iconic)
Dean Winchester’s words of wisdom were for nothing.
Summary:
- Supernatural was a hit television series on The CW that ran from 2005 to 2020.
- Although the show was originally scheduled to end after season 5, it continued even after creator Eric Kripke left the team.
- Fans believe that this may be the reason why the show does not follow its own line: "What's dead should stay dead".
Any show that reaches the 10-season threshold may want to reevaluate its quality and decide whether to continue or not. While there are a few examples of shows that have run for decades and never really lost fan interest, that's not the case for the majority.
Many would agree that's not the case with The CW's Supernatural. Created by Eric Kripke, the show was supposed to run for 5 seasons and end on that note. However, the team decided that there was potential to tell more stories and explore more of the Winchester brothers' journey, so the story continued.
With some episodes significantly better and others significantly worse than what they had achieved before, Supernatural ran for another full decade, ending in the wake of COVID in 2020. Although there were many memorable moments, the fandom agrees that there were also many absurd moments and devices that the writers overused.
The constant death of either Sam or Dean is one of them.
How Many Times Have Sam and Dean Died In Supernatural?
Over the course of 15 seasons of the show, both Sam and Dean have about 120 "deaths" to share, depending on whether you want to count the ones from the finale or not. Of course, about 100 of them are courtesy of the Mystery Spot episode from season 3, but the rest are shared by the brothers on many different occasions.
While all of these deaths and resurrections mostly serve to show the truly supernatural way the universe is set up within the show, they also cause the stakes to drop incredibly low. While the first couple of times viewers were scared that the deaths were final, the more the writers killed off characters and then brought them back, the less meaningful it felt.
Also, these deaths crossed one of the most important moments of season 2, when Dean is brought back from the dead for the first time. His line, "What's dead should stay dead," reflects how he feels after the resurrection, but loses some of its meaning with each new season.
While the number of deaths both leads have had to endure during the show’s run is a bit ridiculous, it doesn’t take away the nostalgic feel that many still have about Supernatural. If you’re thinking of re-living the best moments of Sam and Dean’s hunting journey, you can go ahead and stream the show on Max.
