It's time to say goodbye to arguably the best villain Superman ever went against. Or is it really?

Fans of Superman & Lois are in for a shakeup as it's been confirmed that Jon Cryer will not be returning as Lex Luthor in the show's upcoming third season. Cryer, who rose to fame on the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men, had previously played the iconic villain in the Arrowverse series Supergirl.

But in a series of tweets, Cryer revealed that he will be busy shooting a new NBC show in February and that the Superman & Lois team had already informed him that they were going in a different direction with the character. He also praised the team for giving him a "heads up" about the recasting before it was announced, adding that he was "grateful they were classy about it."

"Most of the time, actors learn about this stuff when it comes out in the trades," the actor added.

While it's not yet clear who will take over the role of Lex Luthor on Superman & Lois, fans are already expressing their disappointment at Cryer's departure.

"I can't believe they're replacing Cryer, he was perfect as Luthor," wrote one fan on Twitter. "This show is not going to be the same without him."

The third season of Superman & Lois is set to premiere on March 13, and with the series taking place in its own reality separate from the Arrowverse, it's anyone's guess what twists and turns the show has in store for its characters.

One thing is for sure, though: it looks like The CW is ready to bid farewell to its DC Comics adaptations, as DC Studios is gearing up to launch the newly-minted DCU, so the drama is highly likely to be super-sized. If only to give our beloved characters a proper send-off.
