Can the absence of one major character actually ruin the show?

Summary:

  • Many fans feel that Suits lost its main premise after season 7.
  • Fans believe that Harvey and Mike's duo was the best part of the show.
  • Patrick J. Adams left the show because his character's story was complete.

Saying goodbye to a favorite character is never easy, especially when they have been at the center of the story for seven seasons. But Suits fans had to wish Mike well in his journey outside the legal drama's universe when actor Patrick J. Adams left the show after season 7.

The show went on for two more seasons, and the fact that the showrunners continued the series became a point of contention among fans of it. Some viewers were sure that Suits lost its charm when Rachel and later Mike left the show.

But if it's still okay to have Suits without a romantic angle for one of the main characters, losing the brotherhood that was established between Mike and Harvey seemed like too big a deal.

“The thing that made the show so great was Mike and Harvey, with one of them gone, the show is automatically worse [in my opinion]. The storyline was alright but overall worse than 7,” one Redditor said.

There are actually many comments like this in every Suits-related Reddit thread, and frankly, the fans who feel this way have a point. The first few seasons of the show were absolutely amazing for this very reason: the dynamic between the two male leads was incredible and the chemistry they shared felt real.

However, this exact argument is used by the other half of fans who are sure that Mike's departure only made the show better. Meaning that it would have been nice to have him still in the show, but his absence didn't take anything away from the show, because by the time the show reached its 7th season, Mike's character had nowhere to go but out.

“At the start of the series he got to use his super powers of photographic memory to solve complex issues. But the past few seasons haven't had ANY of that. Mike can basically leave and we won't skip a beat,” Redditor TheFamousAmos said.

After he left the show, Adams said almost the same thing. The main reason for his departure was the fact that he felt Mike's story was complete in season 7.
