Suicide Squad's Long-Awaited 'Ayer Cut' May Finally See The Light Of Day
It seems that the dreams of the fans will come true.
David Ayer's Suicide Squad was only the third installment in the then-new DCU, released in 2016, and to say that it was highly anticipated would be an understatement.
The film promised an entirely new take on the superhero genre, focusing on a team of supervillains who reluctantly take on government assignments in order to reduce their prison sentences.
With a talented filmmaker at the helm and an impressive cast including stars such as Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis and others, it looked extremely promising and destined for success.
Unfortunately, upon its release, Suicide Squad received a rather cold reception from critics and fans alike, as it was a bland and incoherent mess.
Apparently this was the result of constant studio interference, as even the director himself stated more than once that the theatrical cut had little to do with his original vision.
A very similar situation happened a year later with 2017's Justice League, which also suffered from the involvement of the studio and Joss Whedon, who basically took over post-production after original director Zack Snyder had to step down due to a personal tragedy.
All of this led fans to petition for the release of the so-called "Snyder Cut", and miraculously, their wish was granted in 2021, when Zack Snyder's Justice League was released on HBO Max and received much more positive reviews than its predecessor.
In light of this, many fans and David Ayer himself have been pushing for the original cut of Suicide Squad to be released as well, although the situation regarding it has remained unclear until now.
In a recent post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Ayer revealed that the current head of the DCU, James Gunn, told him that his cut of Suicide Squad "would have it's time to be shared."
While no official announcements have been made, apparently "The Ayer Cut" now has some real chances of finally seeing the light of day.
And if David's claims that it's much better than the theatrical cut turn out to be true, we could be in for a spectacle on par with Zack Snyder's Justice League.
