Stephen King’s Forgotten 2016 Time-Travel Series Is Better Than All His Horror Flicks
The show is a definite must-watch.
Summary:
- Though Stephen King is best known for his eerie stories that later on were turned into even more successful movies, his much more profound dramatical stories remain undeservedly unnoticed.
- One of such novels was adapted for Hulu ’s miniseries back in 2016, and, despite raving reviews, the show was quickly forgotten.
- Based on the novel of the same name, the series revolves around a time traveler who embarks on a mission to avert John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
Stephen King may be an unquestionable master of the horror genre, but his storytelling reaches a whole new level when it comes to the proclaimed author’s dramatic narrative.
Behind the immense popularity of King’s eerie novels It, Carrie or The Shining, there are some truly brilliant pieces of his work like Stand by Me, The Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption that for some reason went more into the scary stories’ shadows.
King’s drama novels nonetheless prove themselves to be a lot deeper regarding some mundane aspects, and Hulu’s unfairly forgotten miniseries appears to be a good example for it.
What Is 11.22.63 About?
Based on King’s 2011 novel of the same name, Hulu’s sci-fi drama show 11.22.63 follows Jake Epping, a recently divorced English teacher living in Maine (just like Stephen King’s many other fictional characters). Out of nowhere Jake is given a one-in-a-million chance to go back in time to 1963 and to prevent John F. Kennedy’s assassination during the President’s visit to Texas.
Pled by his longtime friend Al Templeton who isn’t able to finish the journey himself due to terminal illness, Jake embarks on the time-travel experiment that will change the history course for better or rather for worse.
With James Franco in the leading role, the show masterfully juggles seemingly incompatible genres blending real historical facts with pure sci-fi elements; both are further reinforced by the main character’s personal drama that unfolds during the journey.
11.22.63 follows Jake as he settles his whole life in the past, finds a good job and eventually develops romantic feelings for a local school’s librarian Sadie Dunhill while still trying to spy on Kennedy’s killer Lee Harvey Oswald and risking unveiling his real identity.
What Do Fans Say About 11.22.63?
Though the show was quite well received upon its release back in 2016 landing scores of 83% and 88% from the critics and the audience respectively, 11.22.63 still remains one of Stephen King’s best adaptations that was unjustly forgotten too soon.
The history’s current course may still work out well for the show’s second recognition given that John F. Kennedy’s nephew Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is running for the presidential post in this year’s upcoming elections.
