Stephen King Wants You to Watch This 94%-Rated Action Thriller Instead of His Own Movies: ‘Authentic Fright’
King hated one of his adaptations so much he recommended watching another movie instead.
For more than forty years, Stephen King 's works have been regularly brought to the screen by directors of all stripes, and King himself took part in this process. He has written his own scripts, assisted in the preparation of others' scripts, produced, acted, and even directed his own movie (which turned out to be a complete disaster).
At the same time, as King himself noted, cinema has always been something secondary and inferior for him; it was literature that remained the main occupation in his life. At the same time, the author is not shy with kind and not-so-kind words when reviewing the adaptations of his works.
King Recommends This Action Instead of Children of the Corn
Children of the Corn also came under King's criticism, both the 1984 version and the more recent 2020 adaptation. In addition, when one of the fans on X asked where to see Children of the Corn, the writer simply told him to watch another movie.
That movie was the Gerard Butler action thriller Plane, which King described as follows:
“Authentic fright or flight material.”
What is Plane About?
Pilot Brodie has only a few flights left before New Year's so he can finally spend the holidays with his daughter. But the flight does not go according to plan: the route goes straight through a storm, lightning strikes the plane, and the power goes out. Brodie somehow manages to land the plane on one of the Philippine islands.
The situation is complicated by the fact that one of the passengers is a convicted murderer and the officer in charge of him dies in the crash.
It turns out that the plane landed on a nearly deserted island controlled by rebels. And the rebel leader, Junmar, makes his money mainly by taking foreign citizens hostage.
Plane Is an Exemplary Action Movie With Suspenseful Plot
Gerard Butler saving people is a seemingly simple concept that has long outlived itself, but Plane has something to surprise viewers, as confirmed by its unexpectedly high audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes – 94%.
Plane cleverly switches from the disaster movie genre to a spy action movie, and French director Jean-François Richet, who rose to fame with Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 with Vincent Cassel, definitely knows a thing or two about it. He turns a standard action movie into an exciting and controversial project about the search for freedom and second chances.
All this makes Plane much more interesting than it might seem at first glance. This is an exemplary action movie that doesn't waste time with build-up and knows when to replace tear-jerking drama with brutal and spectacular action.
