A criminally overlooked horror flick dubbed “90 minutes of a relentless anxiety attack” gets launched under the spotlight thanks to Stephen King’s personal shoutout.

When he’s not writing his new bestsellers, he’s watching and reading other people’s works. Stephen King has been on a quest to bring the best movies and books to his fans’ attention for years, and his most recent recommendation definitely deserves more of it. This overlooked Spanish horror has a silly premise and an extremely tense execution that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat with clenched teeth.

Can Domestic Furniture Be Genuinely Terrifying?

Starting off strong with a seemingly innocent Biblical reference, we have a happy couple: Jesús and Maria. They’re in love with each other, but there’s one thing that bugs Jesús, and it’s that his significant other is very controlling. Like, Kim Jong-un level of controlling — there hasn’t been a single decision in their life made by him.

One day, Jesús decides to prove to himself and Maria that he’s a real man and not a spineless leech feeding off her iron will. To do so, he goes to buy a coffee table for their humble abode — without consulting his partner, of course. Brave man! But the table he chooses proves to be more than just an intolerably ugly and blatantly overpriced piece of furniture. Jesús should not have been allowed to make any calls.

The premise you just read is that for The Coffee Table: an utterly overlooked Spanish horror movie from 2022. Directed by Caye Casas, this film takes a seemingly mundane and innocent premise and turns it into what Beyond the Cinerama Dome’s Tina Kakadelis described as “an hour-and-a-half of a relentless anxiety attack.”

To no one’s surprise, Stephen King fell in absolute love with it.

“There’s a Spanish movie called The Coffee Table on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. My guess is you have never, not once in your whole life, seen a movie as black as this one. It’s horrible and also horribly funny. Think, the Coen Brothers’ darkest dream,” the King of Horror wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Despite going largely under everyone’s radar, The Coffee Table has some stellar reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, Caye Casas’ film boasts an 88% Critic Score, supported by its 7.1/10 IMDb score. Stephen King’s personal kudos only add to the reasons to watch it… Especially if you’re not prone to having panic attacks.
