Stephen King is widely known as one of the most fruitful and prolific authors of our time. His greatest strength is improvisation, and as a so-called pantser writer, King pumps out new novels and novellas with terrifying speed — something you’d expect from the man dubbed as the King of Horror. Recently, the author took to his social media to make fans’ day with an unexpected yet welcome announcement.
Stephen King’s New Book Dropping Soon
On his X (formerly Twitter) account, Stephen King teased his upcoming release. The book is titled You Like It Darker, and it’s a collection of small stories — one of the author’s most popular and amusing formats. It will come with an audio version right off the bat, which is a nice feature for those who prefer their horror “on the go.”
“I’ve got a book of stories coming out next week — You Like It Darker. The audiobook version is very nice. Will Patton read most of the stories. I read two of them,” the King of Horror shared.
What’s You Like It Darker About?
As a collection book, You Like It Darker features 12 standalone short stories, including both brand new ones and certified King classics: Two Talented Bastids, The Fifth Step, Willie The Weirdo, Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream, Finn, On Slide Inn Road, Red Screen, The Turbulence Expert, Laurie, Rattlesnakes, The Dreamers, and The Answer Man.
The author’s fans showed their excitement in the comment section, with many of them having already pre-ordered You Like It Darker. However, many of them also expressed hope that the new short story collection will be devoid of politics, as that was admittedly the worst part of King’s latest novel Holly which left many readers frustrated. King himself didn’t answer those comments.
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” the author wrote in the afterword of the upcoming collection. The book of short stories releases on May 21, 2024, and is already available for pre-order both in text and audio formats.
