Stephen King-Approved: Apple TV+'s Newest Thriller Series is a Must-Watch
A new TV series has impressed even the King of Horror.
Summary
- A new psychological sci-fi thriller recently premiered on Apple TV+.
- It has been praised by Stephen King for its realism and suspense.
- Many viewers agree with King, and the show is sure to become Apple's new flagship.
In the past, the absolute leader in terms of quality of series was undoubtedly HBO. Sure, on traditional TV, CBS, NBC, ABC and AMC were the champions, and in the case of streaming services, Netflix led the way with exciting original projects, but none of them could even come close in terms of concentration of high-quality shows. But sadly, HBO's glory has begun to fade in the face of new competitors who are winning more and more hearts around the world every year.
And from the looks of it, the 'new HBO' status may very well go to Apple TV+. The streaming service has consistently delivered incredibly memorable shows that are sure to become important milestones in pop culture history. And most recently, the platform released a new series praised by none other than Stephen King himself.
What's the New Apple TV+ Show About?
The show in question is Constellation. It focuses on Swedish astronaut Johanna Ericsson (Noomi Rapace). She has returned to Earth following a mysterious accident on the ISS and for some undisclosed reason moves with her daughter to a secluded cabin in the middle of a dense woods. And here is where the creepy stuff begins: Johanna hardly seems like her usual self, she is extremely bewildered by everything around her, and repeatedly watches a cryptic footage from space.
She suspects something is seriously wrong as she can't remember many of the events her husband and daughter talk about, and little details like the color of their car are different from what she remembers. Then the situation gets further complicated with the arrival of a scientist, portrayed by Jonathan Banks, who starts talking about quantum leaps.
Stephen King Has Praised Constellation
Stephen King is not only the master of all things spooky and supernatural, he is also the master of all things spooky and realistic! After all, the legendary American author is also known for his ability to create thrilling suspense in which the main horror element is human, not supernatural creatures or celestial powers. That's why, being a great cinephile, he didn't miss the opportunity to share his opinion about Constellation. Well, to be more precise, about the first two episodes of the new show.
'The first 2 episodes of CONSTELLATION are just about perfect--nail-biting and believable,' King shared his opinion on X (ex-Twitter).
Still, the writer took a certain amount of caution with the series, soberly realizing that, unfortunately, the finale might be disappointing. Or might not!
'The question is whether or not it can stick the landing.'
But what do others think of the show?
As of this writing, the show's Rotten Tomatoes score is 71% from critics and 71% from viewers. It is a rare precedent where the opinions of professional reviewers and audiences coincide.
Well, King's expectations for the next episodes were partially met, as many noted that the intrigue continued to build despite the convoluted plot. Still, not everyone liked the pacing and the acting (yes, even Noomi Rapace received some criticism), which was regarded as a bit obnoxious. But there were also enough people who didn't like where the story was going after the fifth episode.
In other words, just as quantum leaps are the leitmotif of this psychological sci-fi thriller, the plot itself is a true example of Schrödinger's Cat, both profound and extremely flawed. Either way, Constellation is a great addition to the Apple TV+ roster, making the streaming service almost the best source for well-written and memorable projects that can rival HBO's most popular shows in terms of prestige and quality.
The new and final episode of Constellation will be released next week on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, March 27.
