Stella Kidd Forced Chicago Fire Writers To Work Hard To Cover Her Absence
The departure of one character always causes so much trouble for the show's entire creative team.
The fans love Chicago Fire, and that's just a raw fact. Everything about this show just makes them adore it, and it seems like nothing can change that.
Viewers even stand stoically through the departures of their favorite characters, always hoping for the best and giving the writers plenty of credit because, well, they must know better.
But sometimes even the creative team has a hard time with the challenges some actors bring to the show.
The thing is, their random departures from the show have left the writers working almost on the fly, trying to rewrite the entire season's storyline without one or two key cast members.
And one character in particular has remained a fan favorite for nearly 150 episodes. Of course, we are talking about Stella Kidd, brilliantly portrayed by Miranda Rae Mayo.
Her character is this fierce, courageous woman who has been battling death in almost every episode since she was first introduced in season 4 of the show.
So it came as a shock to fans when she suddenly left the show at the beginning of the first part of season 10.
And as the showrunners also revealed, Kidd's absence from the show was a totally unplanned incident. Derek Haas fully admitted that her departure was a sort of big crisis for the show's writers and executives.
He also shared in the interview with Meet Us at Molly's that the writers of the show were basically forced to adjust to a situation that was simply out of their control when Miranda Rae Mayo had to take time off from the show.
"There were many, many things going on at the beginning of the season in terms of health-related incidents," he said.
Without going into detail about what those problems were, he added that there was also a lot of rewriting of scripts while they were already being filmed. And not only for Kidd, but for the other characters too.
The new episode of Chicago Fire airs May 18, with the season 11 finale to arrive on May 24.
