Sorry, Young Sheldon Fans, Season 7 Will Probably Be The Last One
Maybe it's time to end the story of the young genius on a high note.
If you're a die-hard fan of Young Sheldon, it might be time to stock up on tissues, because you're going to need them – just get used to the idea that season seven might be the last one. Forewarned is forearmed, right?
CBS announced its schedule for the fall of 2023, and Young Sheldon wasn't included in the list. The delay is apparently the result of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Since the writers have reached agreements with the studios, the writers' room is already at work, but it's obvious that no shooting can begin without the actors, who have yet to achieve the same result as the writers.
The main proof that Young Sheldon will most likely end with season 7 is an obvious fact – Iain Armitage, who plays the main role of Sheldon Cooper, is growing up and has already surpassed his character in age.
One of the main problems with a show starring children is the natural and inevitable process of growing up, and if the show drags on, the child actors often look (ridiculously) more mature than their characters. Yes, sometimes children grow at a shocking rate, and we bet that if the producers could slow down the process, they would do so.
In the case of low-budget and relatively unnoticed projects, viewers may turn a blind eye to this, but Young Sheldon is just too famous to afford such a discrepancy between the actor and his character. In addition, the delay in filming does not help the show's creators in this regard.
Making season 7 the last one is one of the possible decisions, according to the show's executive producer Steve Holland:
“We’ve certainly started to talk about it. When you’re in the middle of a season, it’s such a grind that we haven’t had too many in-depth conversations. But now, as we’re getting to the end [of Season 6], we’ve started to talk about it more.”
In 2021, CBS renewed Young Sheldon for three seasons, including season 7, and given the losses the network is incurring due to the delayed schedule, there is no certainty that management will decide to enter into new contracts.
Moreover, the prequel is inextricably tied to TBBT and its canon, and while there were many inconsistencies, the show still sticks to the basic outline of the boy’s story.
Season 7 will likely focus on Sheldon's life as he turns 14, which has always been considered a key point in his development as a person. We may see the death of his father, George Sr., as mentioned in TBBT.
