There are many controversial characters on the show, and Guy is at the top of the list.

Summary:

  • Although most viewers are rooting for Guy, he has done too many controversial things to be considered a good match for Nan.
  • Guy originally wanted to marry Nan for her money, ran away from her when she told him her biggest secret, and lied to his best friend Theo right to his face.
  • Unlike Guy, Theo seems like the perfect match for Nan; not only does he truly love her, but he can also help her mother get the divorce she deserves.

Is there any reason to root for Guy besides his handsome looks? Yes, most fans are all in for the poor aristocrat, but let's face it – Guy is far from the best person, and not really the best match for Nan.

Guy Made Many Controversial Decisions

Let's start at the beginning. At first, Guy only met Nan because he saw her as a piggy bank – his own financial problems threatened to make him homeless, and a rich American would be the perfect way out of a seemingly hopeless situation.

Yes, over time Guy developed sincere (and mutual) feelings for Nan, but he was terrified when she told him her biggest secret – that she was an illegitimate daughter. And what did Guy do? He just ran away.

You can talk a lot about the fact that he came back after that, but it was already late, and listen to his excuses, but the fact remains – at the moment when Nan felt most vulnerable and unprotected, the man to whom she told her secret just gave her a strange look and left.

Guy Is Far From Being a Good Friend

Moreover, he only admitted his true feelings when Nan was about to marry someone else, and not just some random guy, but Guy's best friend. Basically, The Buccaneers fails again and again in its seemingly main theme – friendship.

These five American women who came to England and promised to stay together very quickly forgot about each other, got married one after the other and even openly betrayed their closest friends.

And just like them, Guy (let's emphasize this again — he's Theo's best friend), writes a letter to his fiancée with a declaration of love and doesn't even try to stay away from Nan, although he claims the opposite.

Theo Would Be a Perfect Match for Nan

Theo, unlike Guy, looks like a perfect Disney prince (in a good way) – he really loves Nan, and unlike Guy, is not afraid of his fiancée's origin, and what's more, like a true gentleman, he keeps her secret and lets her tell it herself.

Yes, Theo may have a rather odd haircut (costume designers, please do something about that), but so far we've only seen him to be an exceptionally honorable man who loves Nan with all his heart.

Then there is Nan's mother, Patti, who has managed to become a favorite character for many viewers because of the sacrifices she makes for Nan. She has finally made the fateful decision to break up with Tracy because of his countless affairs and infidelities. In order to do so, however, Nan must marry Theo, a duke whose fortune can provide Petti with a decent life as a single woman.
