Sony Learned Its Lesson on Ratings While Marvel Trails Behind
The Kraven the Hunter movie is officially rated R, while Marvel still sticks to PG ratings.
Kraven the Hunter, an upcoming movie based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name that will be the latest addition to Sony's Spider-Man Universe (not to be confused with the Marvel Cinematic Universe), has finally provided a glimpse of its footage.
A video was shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and included scenes of the titular anti-hero, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, brutally killing several poachers, as well as revealing that another Marvel character, Rhino, played by Alessandro Nivola, will be present in the film.
With bloody scenes of Kraven tearing his enemies apart and an official confirmation from Taylor-Johnson, it is now clear that the movie will be R-rated.
This is a welcome change, as Sony's Venom and Morbius movies were criticized for staying PG despite the violent nature of the characters.
One of the biggest disappointments came when Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which featured the titular Carnage alien symbiote whose host was the insane serial killer Cletus Kasady, was completely devoid of gore and violence, completely undermining the character's psychotic and murderous origins.
So naturally, fans are rejoicing that Sony has finally come to its senses and is no longer afraid to portray its ant-heroes in the way they deserve.
They also find it disappointing that Marvel continues to avoid R-ratings in their movies, with the only confirmed exception being the upcoming Deadpool 3.
Considering that a movie about the vampire hunter Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, is in the works, it is quite sad that it will also stick PG as other MCU movies.
Especially compared to the 1998-2004 Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, which was already R-rated and benefited greatly from it, being praised for its wild and stylish action.
Perhaps if Kraven the Hunter is a success, it will change that and make studios less afraid to show blood and violence in superhero movies where it is appropriate.
The film is scheduled to be released on October 6, 2023, more than a year before Marvel's Deadpool 3, which is set to be released on November 8, 2024.
