Don't worry, no book spoilers here.

See, when you watch a show about a dystopian society that has to live in a huge underground bunker with hundreds of floors, one question comes to mind.

Why in the world would these people use stairs instead of elevators?

After all, Apple TV 's new sci-fi hit makes it clear that the Silo 's inhabitants are no strangers to technology, even if things like rubber ducks and lenses occasionally throw them for a loop.

Naturally, many fans have wondered why there are no elevators in the Silo — just long spiral staircases that make it look extremely difficult to get around the Silo.

Obviously, this makes things unnecessarily difficult for the Silo residents, as many people may have friends and family on different floors, and the fact that there are no elevators and no means of communication (except for small telegrams delivered by porters) just makes it hard to stay in touch.

Well, in a dystopian society, you could almost think that this is one of the ways the authorities exert their control over people by preventing them from interacting too much with each other. Segregation has never been easier, has it?

The show has already indicated that the lack of elevators is not just a showrunner's mistake; in episode 5, The Janitor's Boy, Walk questions the lack of elevators in the Silo, as does pretty much everyone in the fandom.

Book readers know there's a reason the Silo doesn't have elevators; we won't spoil it for people who just want to enjoy the Apple TV show.

But now that Silo has acknowledged what almost seemed like a plot hole, it's clear that we'll be revealing the mystery very soon.

The next episode of Silo, called The Relic, will be available on Apple TV Plus on Friday, June 2.
