After 12 seasons, most of the characters on The Big Bang Theory were in their endgame relationships, and they were power couples of note.

Fans had their favorite relationships for different reasons; Leonard and Penny were the best friends who eventually fell in love, Howard and Bernadette had grown a sweet, happy family having two children, and Sheldon and Amy had gone on to be awarded the Nobel Prize for physics, the ultimate academic couple.

Despite there being so much to love about each of them, the fans' favourite couple was not included in this list because it was an unlikely friendship with an unbreakable bond that fans felt outweighed any other relationship.

And no, it wasn't the friendship between Sheldon and Leonard. Fans felt that the true power couple was the ditsy blonde-next-door and the eccentric, socially awkward genius.

Whilst Penny and Sheldon were far from the obvious choice for a power couple, they seemed to bring out the best in each other.

Penny had a way of getting through to Sheldon when no one else could, and has always loved and accepted him unconditionally despite his eccentric and annoying tendencies.

One of the most heartwarming parts of Sheldon and Penny's friendship is surrounding Sheldon's sacred 'Soft Kitty" song.

It was a soothing melody that his mother sang to him when he was young, and he considered it sacred, so it was a huge surprise when it is revealed that he lets Penny sing the song to him to comfort him.

There was even one sweet moment when the roles were reversed and Sheldon sang the "Soft Kitty" song to Penny.

Their career aspirations are completely different, but Sheldon is one of the most supportive people when it comes to Penny's acting career, and Penny managed to help Sheldon with one of his biggest breakthroughs after talking through his dilemma with Penny.

The pair had a sweet, sibling-like bond and there were never any past romantic experiences between them. With Sheldon's mother and sister living far away in Texas, perhaps Penny filled a void that Sheldon would never admit to having.

Like any sibling, Sheldon never missed an opportunity to insult Penny's intelligence, and the two would occasionally bicker, but they always cared for each other when they knew the other was facing a dilemma.

Sheldon and Penny's relationship was one of the most unique and comedic ones in the series, but it was also a powerful portrayal of a strong, loving platonic relationship not just between a man and a woman, but two people who couldn't have been more different, but that is what made their friendship so unique and heartwarming to watch.
