Scandalous Role Emilia Clarke Had To Turn Down Because Of Game of Thrones
That was not a role for a Targaryen Queen after all.
After many years of portraying a character, actors are usually faced with the dilemma of choosing between a similar role that they know they're good at and that is likely to be well-received, or trying something new. While everyone chooses what they feel is best for their career path, they may have to turn down some roles in both scenarios.
Emilia Clarke, who portrays Daenerys Targaryen in the iconic TV show Game of Thrones, faced a similar problem when the show was still running. The actress decided to explore different roles and opportunities so as not to be stuck in a blonde wig and fantasy setting forever.
She starred in several action films like Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story, as well as the romantic drama Me Before You. What you probably didn't know, even if you're a Clarke fan, is that the actress was offered the chance to play a completely different character in a completely different setting.
Emilia Clarke could have been Fifty Shades of Grey's Anastasia Steele if she hadn't turned it down.
The actress opened up about the offer in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. As it turns out, she was so interested in the project that she even met with director Sam Taylor-Johnson twice, but decided to move on to other roles:
“I’d done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again,” the actress said, explaining her reasons.
It's not that Clarke is known for nudity. If anything, Game of Thrones fans agree that half of Daenerys' nude appearances were unnecessary and her character was overly sexualized.
However, the stand the actress has taken is completely understandable. In such a fast-paced industry, any actress would want to be remembered for her artistic performance, not her body.
Luckily, Clarke's latest project, Secret Invasion, doesn't seem to be the type that would require any nudity on her part. You can stream the first three episodes of the show on Disney Plus, or tune in every Wednesday to watch the upcoming episodes.
