Sarah Hyland Didn't Like Modern Family Ending, And Honestly? Same
Modern Family stormed onto the sitcom scene back in 2009, and after 11 wonderful seasons, came to an end in 2020.
The show focuses on three unique families who are all linked by Jay Pritchet. Jay is married to Gloria, his much younger and beautiful second wife, and together they parent her son Manny, and later their own baby Joe.
Jay has two children, Claire, and Mitchell. Claire is married to Phil and has three children, Haley, Alex, and Luke. Mitchell is married to Cameron, and the pair adopt their daughter Lily. The show stepped outside most other sitcoms of its era, featuring a blended family, and a gay family, and showcased all the exciting adventures they got up to.
But not everyone was happy with how the show ended. As with any show, there are bound to be fans that are not overjoyed with how a beloved show finishes things up.
In the case of Modern Family though, one of the cast members has been vocal about her dislike for the show's ending, particularly how it affects her character.
Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy, Claire and Phil's eldest daughter, was not pleased with how the story ended for Haley. She has been quoted as having the following specific gripes on how Modern Family ended.
She wanted Haley to have a successful career, not just a job
Haley was not the brightest girl of her age, but she did have dreams and goals. Fashion was something for which she held great passion and Hyland wanted to see her embark on a successful career in this industry. But sadly, it was not to be, with Haley winding up working as an editor at an online lifestyle company.
She wanted Haley to thrive by the end, not struggle.
When we last see Haley, she is a wife, a mother, and juggling a job. But Hyland has commented that she wished she could have seen Haley tackling these multiple roles in life with more success and joy:
"There are so many amazing mothers who are also hard workers and excel in their jobs and kill it every day in both aspects. That would have been a really cool thing to see — especially from Haley."
She wanted Haley to appear more in the final season
Haley strangely only appears in eight episodes of the final season, and Hyland herself does not know the reason for this. While she has not directly stated that she wished her character was in more episodes, she did tweet the following:
"Apparently I've been busy with the twins."
A not-so-subtle passive-aggressive dig, perhaps? Regardless, Sarah Hyland is obviously not happy with how things wrapped for Haley Dunphy.
