Sam Raimi Explains What Was Wrong With Bully Maguire in 'Spider-Man 3'

There are certain scenes that are iconic and cringe-worthy at the same time, and Peter Parker's goofy dance in Sam Raimi 's 'Spider-Man 3' is undoubtedly one of them. It's not just us speaking – Raimi himself also said this moment is "hysterical" for him to watch.

In an interview with Fandom the director, who has just returned to superhero movies with Marvel's 'Doctor Strange ' sequel, agreed that Tobey Maguire 's weird dance outside the tailor shop was… something.

The thing with 'Spider-Man 3', if you don't remember, was that Peter Parker, infected with the Venom symbiote, was battling his demons, showing his dark side. Fans even dubbed him "Bully Maguire" after that movie. But the dance scene is far from what you imagine when you hear "the dark side of your favorite hero".

"Well, we meant it to be funny, actually. It was Peter Parker's version — this lame kid — of what it must be like to be his evil self. But he's so whipped. He's so out of it that that's his take on it. And that didn't go over well with the audience. But that's what we were trying to do. So I'm not surprised that people… I'm glad people find it funny! We wanted it to be fun," Raimi said.

However, fans seem to be very protective of this scene: after all, it has already become somewhat a meme classic.
